Flourishing teachers = positive,creative,quality teaching and learning.
We know that teaching is a stressful job.There are many grim statistics about the numbers leaving the profession but we also know that teaching is a wonderful role with enormous job satisfaction from having the opportunity to shape young lives and make a real difference.
Supporting teachers to develop their own well-being through the use of different strategies and techniques gives them the opportunity to productively manage the trials and tribulations of their demanding roles.
Also in order for staff to maximise the potential of the children they need to enjoy good well-being. Teacher well-being is not only a profound issue for our teachers - it also has a major impact on pupil outcomes. Research has shown that teacher wellbeing impacts pupils' SATS results, and also has an effect on pupils' own social and emotional wellbeing. Poor well-being creates a negative learning environment and damages the quality of relationships between teacher and pupil.
There is a very good reason that flight attendants instruct passengers to put on their own oxygen mask before helping others in an emergency, and this analogy is absolutely the same for teacher wellbeing.Teachers cannot teach well if they are not functioning effectively.

An example of one option of staff development workshops. A series of three well-being development workshops where staff identify the importance of their well-being,balancing workloads,managing stress and exploring ways to flourish.
Workshop 1: Staff are introduced to Martin Seligman's PERMA model. (Martin is widely recognised as the founder of Positive Psychology, and is a leading authority in the fields of Positive Psychology, and well-being research.) Seligman believes that the elements of the PERMA model can help people reach a life of fulfilment, happiness and meaning. Staff explore these core elements of psychological well-being and happiness and identify ways to increase these elements in their personal and professional lives.
Workshop 2: Staff learn that optimism is a habit that can be learnt and explore the four basic skills of optimism. Staff examine their explanatory styles and gain an excellent understanding of how this affects their thoughts, feelings and resultant behaviour. They consider the effects of their use of language on thinking, emotion and physiology.
Workshop 3: Staff complete the VIA skills character strengths survey to discover their unique range of strengths; they consider how they can maximise the use of their strengths to enhance their own well-being. They then work as a team, discussing their individual strengths and how they can use them to enhance whole team well -being.
Throughout the sessions staff discuss the importance of social investment and positive social interactions. They explore the importance of gratitude and kindness for well-being and identify how they can develop practices at work.
There are many different ways that the workshops can be delivered depending on the needs of the school. Twilight insets over 3 terms, an inset day with a follow up twilight, monthly sessions. The options are limitless.
Mental Toughness for Flourishing
Mental toughness is a personality construct that relates how people deal with challenges,stressors and pressure. It had its origins in sport and is now used in education.The Mental Toughness model is comprised of four components.The 4cs - Commitment,Challenge,Control and Confidence. Commitment is defined as the ability to carry out task despite set backs or problems.Challenge refers to seeking out opportunities for personal development .Control subdivides into two areas-emotional control and life control, believing that you are influential and not controlled by others. Confidence also sub divides into confidence in abilities and interpersonal confidence.Clough et al (2002) developed a Mental Toughness Questionnaire MTQ48 which measures mental toughness. As a licensed practitioner I work with teachers to identify areas where they can develop their mental toughness.The research indicates that people with higher mental toughness benefit from a wide range of benefits e.g. greater ability to cope with stress, effective management of emotions, better relationships and even increased sleep!
